Poverty, choice and dying in the UK: a call to examine whether public health approaches to palliative care address the needs of low-income communities

People living on a low income are less likely to access palliative care in the UK; however, beyond statistics, little is known about impact of poverty attitudes towards death and experiences dying bereavement. Covid-19 has disproportionally affected poorer communities foregrounded issues social health inequalities including loss grief. Whilst this might suggest an opportune moment for embracing inclusive health-promoting approaches care, paper argues that centrality concepts such as choice within approaches, assumptions what constitutes ‘good death’, disregard ways which structural, economic aspects interface with dying, may exacerbate dying.
